Kano Gov’t Condemns Hoodlums Attack on Doctor at Murtala Hospital

The Executive Secretary Kano State Hospitals Management Board Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda has strongly condemned the attack by hoodlums on a medical Doctor of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

This is contained in a statement on Monday by Samira Suleiman, Public Relation Officer, Kano state hospital management board.

According to the statement the incident which took place on Sunday evening, after an eclamptic patient brought to the facility prompted the nurse to call the attention of the doctor on duty.

“The doctor who was already in the theatre took to his heels to save the patient brought in but on getting there, met that the patient has already died.

“The brother of the patient then invited thugs to attack the medical personnels on duty, alleging that the doctor killed his sister. The thugs came in huge number fully armed. They strangled the doctor and also threatened to kill him but was saved by security personnel who arrived the scene just in time after they were alerted by a nurse on duty.

“Even though the security personnels in the facility where few in numbers which the hoodlums over powered them they where able to calm the situation. Wambai police division deployed more security personnel to help safe guard the facility due to the threat by the hoodlums claiming that they would be back at midnight to finish what they started.

“The chief medical director of MMSH and other hospital management staff arrived at the scene to help control the situation which led to the Nigerian medical association to pulling out their members from service until the situation in the facility is brought back to normal,” she added.

She also revealed that Dr Nagoda, directors of the board, security agencies from the police force and Dss, representatives of NMA, SSD, NGDP hald an emergency meeting and action points where taken. Part of the action taken were bringing the perpetrators to book, as legal actions to be taken on anyone found guilty. Also security personnels would be beefed up at the facility both entrance and exit points, security personnels at the most sensitive areas in the facility and also create more awareness to the populace on how to handle hospital issues.

The Executive Secretary assured the doctors and NMA on their safety and appealed with body to allow their members to continue with their normal routine in the facility.

Dr Nagoda however maintained his and the board’s stand on verifying stories and getting facts before publication.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association and
NAGGMDP Have appealed with their members to remain calm and for those who are working with Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital to return back to their duty post with immediate effect.

This was contained in a release by NMA secretary after a long deliberation with the CMD of the facility, the Executive Secretary HMB Kano, Honourable Commissioner of Health and the Commissioner of Police over the incidence which took place at the maternity section of the hospital.

The secretary added that “We will continue to monitor events and update our members accordingly. The Commissioner of Police has promised to as a matter of urgency deploy policemen to the various emergency units of the hospital and has also promised to work together with the hospital authority and the HMB to fish out the perpetrators of this heinous act and bring them to justice.

The letter also stated that, the give thanks to the Commissioner of Police for his prompt intervention and look forward to more cordial relationship with them and HMB.

The Executive Secretary once again assured the delegation from the NMA that henceforth their members would be safe and also all facilities would be put on adequate security to avert reoccurance of such incidence.
