The Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB), with support from the FCDO Lafiya Programme, has concluded a two-day engagement workshop with local government chairmen on strengthening the delivery of primary health care (PHC) services.
The workshop, which ended on Friday, August 22, 2025, in Kaduna State, focused on strengthening the PHC Advisory Committees across all 44 local governments as a mechanism for improving governance, accountability, and service delivery.
Participants resolved to strengthen the committees through regular funding, financing support, and stronger oversight. They also mapped out action points to sustain reforms under the Primary Health Care Under One Roof (PHCUOR) policy.
Among the agreed steps are the reactivation of LGA PHC Advisory Committees, payment of counterpart funding for health programmes, quarterly review meetings between KSPHCMB and ALGON, recruitment of midwives in LGAs facing shortages, establishment of PHC task force committees, capitalization of Drug Revolving Funds to expand access to essential medicines, and bi-annual review meetings involving the legislature, health leadership, and local government chairmen.
Speaking at the closing session, the Kano State Commissioner for Health commended the council chairmen for their commitment and assured them of government’s determination to revitalize over 1,200 PHC facilities in the state. He said the goal was to make quality and affordable health services accessible to all residents.
The Director General of KSPHCMB, in his closing remarks, thanked the FCDO Lafiya Programme for its technical and financial support, while urging LGA chairmen to translate the workshop outcomes into practical improvements in their communities.
The event ended with renewed commitment from all stakeholders to strengthen PHC systems and deliver better health outcomes for the people of Kano State.
