Kano Govt Pledges Regular Engagement with Juma’at Mosque Imams on Policies and Programs
In a bid to ensure citizens are well-informed about government policies and programs, the Kano State Government has pledged to regularly update Juma’at Mosque Imams on its activities.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, made the pledge on Tuesday during a two-day sensitization workshop organized for Juma’at Mosque Imams. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry for Religious Affairs and the Kano State Council of Imams.
Comrade Waiya noted that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf recognizes Islamic scholars and Imams as vital stakeholders in societal development. He emphasized the government’s respect for religious leaders and expressed commitment to strengthening their relationship.
“The messages conveyed by Imams during sermons have a powerful impact and resonate deeply within the community,” Waiya said. “We urge you to always use appropriate and constructive language, as your voices are highly respected. That is why the government seeks collaboration with you for effective dissemination of information.”
The workshop, themed “Building a Better Future Together: Understanding and Supporting Government Policies for Societal Development”, aims to equip religious leaders with accurate knowledge about government initiatives to better inform the public.
Waiya also called on Imams to offer constructive advice to the government, urging them to integrate insights from the workshop into their sermons.
Also speaking at the event, the Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, advised Imams to educate their followers on the importance of peace and social harmony. “It is not proper for religious leaders to focus on opposing one another. Instead, teach the people their religion and speak the truth to those in authority,” he said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Council of Friday Mosque Chief Imams, Sheikh Muhammad Nasir Adam, stated that while it is not customary for Imams to offer advice to governors or traditional rulers during sermons, such counsel is traditionally given in private.
The sensitization workshop, which attracted numerous Islamic clerics and Friday Mosque Imams, is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.
