Kano Govt Speaks on Northwest University’s Registration Fee Increment

By Mustapha Salisu

Following growing dissatisfaction among students of Northwest University, Kano, over the recent hike in registration fees from N17,000 to N57,000, the Kano State Government has offered clarification on the rationale behind the decision.

According to the government, the increase is connected to the adoption of the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative by the university.

The State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, provided this explanation while receiving a delegation from the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS) yesterday (Thursday) on a condolence visit over the tragic death of 22 athletes returning from the National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Gwarzo who is also the Commissioner for Higher Education, emphasized that students are not being asked to pay the increased amount directly, but are required to present proof of enrollment in the NELFUND scheme.

“The school is not requesting money from students. What is required is evidence of enrollment, as the university will receive the funds directly from NELFUND,” he stated.

Gwarzo cited Bayero University, Kano, as an example, noting it received over N900 million due to a high number of NELFUND enrollees, while Northwest University received only N4 million due to low participation. He also mentioned that some institutions in other regions received over N1 billion.

“This situation compelled us, as administrators, to make the decision to increase the registration fee, in order to encourage all students to register under NELFUND. The university will receive its share of the funds, and students will also receive monthly stipends,” he explained.

Addressing concerns that NELFUND is a loan, the Deputy Governor clarified that repayment only begins after the beneficiary has secured a well-paying job and has served for two years.

“As a government, if we do not support you in accessing this initiative, then it means we do not have your best interest at heart,” he added.

He further stated that the initiative would help Northwest University increase student intake, expand academic programs, and improve facilities. He urged students experiencing challenges with enrollment to contact the university’s desk officers for assistance.

The Deputy Governor called on NAKSS to educate students on the benefits of the NELFUND scheme, assist their peers in navigating the registration process, and engage with the state government for support where necessary.
