Kano Govt Targets N100bn Revenue In 2025

By Abdullahi Yusuf

The Kano State Government says it is working to generate over N100 billion as revenue in 2025 to enhance service delivery across the state.

The Executive Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Dr Zaid Abubakar, disclosed this during the 2025 Annual Performance Review and Strategic Planning Meeting of the Service held in Kano on Wednesday.

Abubakar said Kano, as a centre of commerce, could generate more than N200 billion annually as revenue, given its diverse industrial potential and commerce.

“Kano is a centre of commerce; we have five major markets that are critical not only in sub-Saharan Africa but also the entire continent in terms of fabrics, grains, and other commodities,” he said.

He said the KIRS would also leverage the existing manufacturing industries in the state and agriculture to meet its revenue targets.

The executive chairman also said that the service would sustain efforts in blocking revenue leakages by embarking on a central single account.

He explained that the KIRS, through the state government, would achieve that by reviewing the state’s revenue generation laws as part of efforts to enhance the revenue base of the state.

According to him, Governor Abba Yusuf had approved the review of such laws before the end of the first quarter of this year.

“We have to rewrite the laws because approval has been given by His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which we hope to do before the end of the first quarter of this year,” Abubakar explained.

He said reviewing the tax laws was necessary to enhance overall revenue generation in the state as the existing tax laws are obsolete and ineffective.

According to him, the service has introduced a central revenue account to ensure transparency and accountability as well as to block all leakages.

The Executive Chairman added that KIRS has introduced taxpayer engagement as part of measures to ensure that all taxpayers are fully sensitised on the activities of the service.

“The taxpayer engagement is aimed at coming closer to taxpayers to reduce the work burden on our staff as we have to closely engage them,” he said.

He commended the governor for the support and cooperation he had provided the service, which he said had made their duty easier.

In his remarks,Special Adviser to Governor Yusuf on Revenue, Prof. Ibrahim Barde, urged the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) to address some of the challenges bedevilling the revenue generation system in the state.
