Kano Gov’t Urges for Peaceful Resolution of Border Disputes

By Mustapha Salisu

The Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged the National Boundary Commission to prioritize resolving border disputes across the country, particularly in areas experiencing heightened tensions.

The government emphasized the need for sustainable strategies to address these conflicts effectively.

Governor Yusuf conveyed this message yesterday while receiving a delegation from the National Boundary Commission, led by its Director General, Mr. Adamu Adaji.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of Governor Yusuf, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, acknowledged the critical role of the Commission in addressing both national and international border disputes.

He noted that Kano State has maintained peaceful relations with its neighbouring states by adopting effective dispute-resolution mechanisms to promote development and coexistence.

The Governor emphasized the importance of conflict prevention, stating, “No matter how small a dispute is, let’s try to avoid it, as it can escalate into a crisis that hinders development and unity.”

He also urged the Commission to give immediate attention to the Kano-Katsina-Zinder border and expedite the resolution process to facilitate the revival of the historic trans-Saharan trade route.

Speaking earlier, the Director General of the National Boundary Commission, Mr. Adamu Adaji, stated that the delegation’s visit was part of an advocacy mission and included a technical meeting on the Kano-Jigawa inter-state border.

He pointed out that Kano shares borders with Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Bauchi states, and the Commission is responsible for addressing inter-state boundary issues by placing demarcation pillars to clearly define state borders.

Adaji highlighted the progress made over the years in resolving border disputes but acknowledged existing challenges, including the need for greater involvement of traditional institutions and increased funding.

He called on the Kano State Government to support the state boundary committee in carrying out its responsibilities effectively, ensuring timely resolution of disputes and preventing potential crises.
