Kano Health Ministry Partners KNHA, EngenderHealth, LISDEL to Improve PHC Delivery, Health Outcomes

Kano State Ministry of Health, in partnership with the State House of Assembly with support from EngenderHealth-led consortium partners, has hosted a one-day interactive session aimed at enhancing Primary Healthcare (PHC) delivery and improving health outcomes in the state.
The event, held on Thursday at BON Hotel in Kano, brought together members of the Kano State House of Assembly Committee on Health Matters and development partners to deliberate on future of health sector in the state.
In his welcome address, the Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described PHC as the backbone of any effective healthcare system.

He emphasized that failures in PHC delivery often lead to pressure on secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities. “That is why the Kano State Government is prioritizing the improvement of PHC services across the state,” he stated.
Dr. Yusuf also called on the House of Assembly to enact legislation that would empower the Primary Healthcare Management Agency to function more effectively.
He highlighted the need for such legislation, particularly in light of recent developments around local government autonomy granted by the Federal Government, noting that cases of staff salary, transfers and promotions needs to be within the ambit of the Primary Healthcare Management Board to strengthen PHC Under One Roof in Kano State.
Also giving his speech, Speaker of the KNHA, Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, represented by his Deputy, Hon. Muhammad Bello ButuButu, said the interactive session was organized to build the capacity of lawmakers to fulfill their roles in ensuring effective PHC service delivery.

He urged his colleagues to fully engage in the session to gain insights that could translate into better policy-making and oversight.
Outlining the objectives of the interactive session, LISDEL’s State Coordinator, Muhammad Shuaib, said the session focused on aligning state PHC policies with national health objectives.
He added that key topics included resource allocation, fund utilization, and strategies to strengthen accountability in PHC financing, along with enhancing the legislature’s oversight role in PHC budget implementation and reform tracking.
Earlier in his goodwill message, LISDEL’s Vice President, Hon. Usman Muhammad, welcomed participants and reaffirmed LISDEL’s commitment to leveraging its expertise to improve health outcomes in Nigeria.

He noted that EngenderHealth, as a leading partner in the consortium, remains committed to supporting initiatives that advance PHC in Kano State.
Also in her message, Hajiya Sabuwa Yahaya of the International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH) reiterated her organization’s mission to use media as a tool for public health advocacy and development.
She highlighted the role of advocacy in driving improved PHC services and health outcomes across the state.
PRIME TIME NEWS reports that the interactive session featured a series of paper presentations, plenary discussions, and the development of a communiqué outlining actionable steps to strengthen PHC delivery in Kano State.
