The Kano Concerned Journalists Forum has organized a public sensitization walk aimed at raising awareness on menstrual health and hygiene, as well as the need to support women and girls with access to sanitary pads.
This was contained in a statement signed by by Aminu Abdullahi Ibrahim on behalf of the Forum’s Chairperson, A’isha Ahmad and issued to PRIME TIME NEWS today.
According to Aminu, the awareness walk took place on Saturday morning, with participants trekking from the Kano State Government House to Premier Radio, Kano.
The exercise was conducted in partnership with the Rigar Kariya Foundation.
The walk attracted media professionals, health advocates, and experts from various fields, all united in advocating for improved menstrual hygiene management and the dignity of women and girls.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairperson of the Kano Concerned Journalists Forum, Hajiya Aisha Ahmad Ahmad Ismail, emphasized the importance of breaking the silence surrounding menstruation and ensuring that women and girls receive adequate support.
“Menstrual health is not a luxury; it is a basic human right,” Hajiya Aisha Ahmad Ismail said. “Many girls miss school and many women suffer in silence simply because they cannot access sanitary pads or proper information about menstrual hygiene.
This walk is to educate the public and encourage collective responsibility in supporting women and girls.”
She also called on government agencies, private organizations, and well-meaning individuals to support initiatives that provide sanitary pads and promote awareness.
“We want families, communities, and institutions to understand that assisting women with sanitary pads is an act of dignity and care. When we support menstrual health, we support education, health, and social inclusion,” she added.
Participants in the walk carried placards with messages promoting menstrual hygiene, girl-child support, and the elimination of stigma associated with menstruation.
The organizers described the event as part of ongoing efforts to use media advocacy and community engagement to address public health and social issues affecting women and girls in Kano State.
