Kano Mobilises 9,680 Volunteers for Voter Registration Exercise

Kano State has mobilised at least 9,680 volunteers to participate in the ongoing online pre-voter registration exercise across its 484 wards in 44 local government areas.

The volunteers, with a minimum of 20 in each ward depending on the number of polling units, are to be equipped with android phones to aid the process.

This was part of resolutions reached during a meeting between the Kano State Mobilisation Taskforce on Voter Registration and chairmen of the 44 local government councils, held on Monday at the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

According to the agreement, the volunteers—who will be selected as indigenes of their respective areas, including women—are to undergo training on the online registration process before commencement. They will, in turn, train others at the polling unit level to ensure wider coverage.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Taskforce and Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the initiative was designed to create synergy between the taskforce and local government chairmen.

He noted that despite being Nigeria’s most populous state, Kano recorded low turnout in previous online pre-registration exercises. He urged local government leaders to intensify grassroots sensitisation, stressing that “the exercise should be handled as a civic duty irrespective of party affiliation, aimed at strengthening democracy and good governance.”

Waiya also reassured participants of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to providing the necessary logistical support for the programme.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Tajo Othman Zaura, charged the chairmen to step up mobilisation efforts for a smooth exercise.

Similarly, the ALGON vice chairman and chairman of Nasarawa Local Government, Alhaji Yusuf Imam Ogan Boye, reiterated the council chairmen’s readiness to deliver the desired results.

The taskforce also met with 484 councillors at the Government House coronation hall, where Waiya sought their support. Chairman of the Councillors’ Forum, Alhaji Bashir Achika, described the voter registration as a vital part of the electoral process and reaffirmed their commitment to its success.
