Kano NLC Chairman voices concern over subsidy removal impact on farmers
The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kano State, Malam Kabiru Inuwa, expressed dismay over the adverse impact of subsidy removal on the predominantly farming and trading population of Kano.
The Chairman lamented during a massive and peaceful protest held at the Kano State Government House gate today (Wednesday).
The demonstrators, comprising members of NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) with the protest mantra “Let the poor breathe,” demanded the suspension of fuel subsidy removal, which has led to hardships across various sectors, including agriculture, the largest occupation in Kano.
In his address, Comr. Inuwa pointed out that the increasing dollar exchange rate has led to a skyrocketing price of fertilizer, reaching N27,000 per bag, severely affecting local farmers in the state.
The NLC Chairman appealed to the Kano state government to convey the grievances of the citizens to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and urgently reverse all anti-poor government policies, including fuel price hikes, school fees, and Value Added Tax (VAT).
Kano state Governor Alh. Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, assured the protesters that their demands would be relayed to the president.
The governor appreciated the peaceful conduct of the demonstrators and pledged the government’s commitment to implementing policies that improve the lives of the people.
