Kano Para Athletes Risk Missing Games Due to Lack of Funding

The participation of Kano State para athletes in the upcoming 2nd National Para Games hangs in the balance due to a lack of funding from the state government.

The games, scheduled for December 8th to 15th in Abuja, represent a crucial opportunity for these athletes to compete at a national level and showcase their skills on a larger stage.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano State Chapter, has expressed deep concern over the situation, urging the state government to intervene and provide the necessary financial support. The association recognizes the importance of the games for the athletes’ development and believes that government funding is essential for their success.

Muhammad Nur Tijjani, Secretary of SWAN Kano State Chapter in a statement issued to press men disclosed the lack of funds from the Kano State Sports Commission has put the participation of our para athletes in jeopardy.

“Without this support, these athletes will be forced to miss out on this prestigious event, which would be a huge setback for their morale and development” He stated.

SWAN emphasized that the para games are a platform for athletes with disabilities to excel and showcase their dedication, hard work, and determination.

They also promote inclusivity and break down barriers, making it crucial for Kano State to support its athletes and be represented at the national level.

“We urge the state government to take immediate action and provide the necessary funds to ensure the participation of Kano State para athletes in the upcoming games”

“This is not only a matter of pride for the state but also an opportunity for these athletes to achieve their full potential and inspire others” Tijjani added.

As of the report’s filing, the Kano State contingent remains in Kano awaiting clearance and transport to Abuja. A Sports Commission official confirmed on condition of anonymity that no funds have been allocated for the event, leaving the athletes and their supporters in a state of uncertainty.
