Kano-Sponsored Medical Graduates Appeal to Governor Yusuf Over Withheld Certificates
By Mustapha Salisu
Two Kano State-sponsored medical graduates from October 6 University, Egypt, have appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene and resolve issues preventing them from collecting their degree certificates despite completing their studies since 2019.
The graduates, Tajuddin Isah Ibrahim and Muzammil Muhammad, lamented that their tuition fees from their third year to final year were never fully settled, leaving them stranded and unable to begin their medical careers while their colleagues have long moved on to practice.
In a heartfelt plea, Ibrahim said:
“My name is Tajuddin Isah Ibrahim and I am among the students sponsored to study medicine in Egypt in 2013 under the administration of His Excellency Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. However, despite successfully completing our medical education, my colleague Dr. Muzammil Muhammad and I have been unable to obtain our degree certificates because our tuition fees from level 300 to level 600 were not settled. This unresolved issue has prevented us from beginning our medical careers, leaving us stranded since the completion of our studies in 2019, while the rest of our colleagues have already collected their certificates and have long started practicing. Over the years, we have contacted all relevant government authorities in an effort to resolve this matter, but unfortunately, no meaningful progress has been made. We sincerely appeal to the Administrative His Excellency Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf to kindly look into our plight. We hope that he will assist in resolving this matter amicably so that we may finally obtain our certificates and contribute meaningfully to the medical profession and to society at large.”
Similarly, Muzammil Muhammad, narrating his ordeal, explained:
“I’m Muzammil Muhammad, one among the 40 sponsored medical students in October 6 University Egypt in the year 2013 and graduated 2019 and yet to collect our certificate due to outstanding payment of tuition fees. What happened was, in early 2019, prior to election, we appealed to His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for completion of our tuition fees and which were settled on March 2019. We went to Student Affairs for school ID cards where we were notified that the last payment for me and Tajuddin Isa Ibrahim were since 2014/2015 session and the next commencement will be 2015/2016. However, we inquired more explanation from our agent in name of Muhammad Inuwa Kabir, popularly known as Baffa and he said nothing. And again, we appealed to the state government and no reply. So we asked the Dean of Medicine to aid us to complete our final exams with promise everything will be settled as soon as possible when we get back to Nigeria.”
Muhammad further noted their long struggle for redress, saying:
“We keep writing official letters to necessary sectors in Kano since 2020 like Ministry for Higher Education to Educative Secretary to Secretary to the State Government, to Governor and even to the Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association Kano Chamber for assistance to collect our certificate. Even last month, July, we went to Abuja with Chairman of Kwankwasiya Medical Scholars in name of Dr. Babangida Kibiya where we met His Excellency Engineer Dr. Rabiu Musa, and he promised us it will reach His Excellency Governor and everything will be settled.”
The aggrieved graduates are now calling on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to urgently intervene and resolve the matter, stressing that securing their certificates will not only enable them to serve society as medical doctors but also vindicate years of academic effort sponsored by the state.
