Kano State Government Welcomes Court of Appeal Verdict on Emirate Council Dispute

The Kano State Government has expressed satisfaction with the recent Court of Appeal judgment in Abuja, which resolved the long-standing legal dispute over the Emirate Council reforms.

In a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Kano, key government officials, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Commissioner for Information, jointly addressed the media. They praised the court’s decision, which overturned a Federal High Court ruling that had previously questioned the legality of the state government’s chieftaincy reforms.

The judgment validates the state government’s actions in modernizing Kano’s traditional institutions while preserving its cultural heritage. “This ruling reaffirms our commitment to justice, fairness, and due process,” said the officials, noting that the appellate court confirmed the state’s rightful authority over chieftaincy appointments.

The government highlighted that the decision nullified earlier pronouncements by the Federal High Court and fully upheld the state law governing the emirates, as enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly. The judgment also legitimized all actions taken by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf under the law.

The Kano State Government urged all individuals and institutions to comply with the ruling, emphasizing that it strengthens the state’s resolve to ensure equitable representation and inclusive governance. “We extend our appreciation to the judiciary for upholding justice and fairness,” the officials added.

In conclusion, the government called for unity and cooperation among all stakeholders to promote peace, harmony, and development across the state. It reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with traditional institutions to achieve these goals.

The press conference ended with a call to prioritize the collective interest of Kano State and to respect the court’s verdict.
