Kano: We Will Not Condone Corrupt Practices, Gov. Yusuf Warns Civil Servants
By Mustapha Salisu
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has issued a warning to civil servants, urging them to perform their duties with the highest levels of transparency and accountability while emphasizing that his administration will neither condone nor tolerate any form of corrupt practices within the governance of the state.
Governor Yusuf delivered this message on Saturday during a capacity-building workshop for Kano State Civil Service Directors on Anti-Corruption, organized by the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission in collaboration with the Office of the Head of Civil Service. The event was held in Dawakin-Kudu LGA.
Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, Governor Yusuf highlighted the state government’s findings, which revealed numerous instances of grand corruption involving civil servants, prompting this clear warning.
“As you may be aware, our resolve to fight corruption has already resulted in numerous cases currently before the court,” Governor Yusuf reminded the participants.
The governor expressed deep concern over how corruption has hindered national progress, lamenting that Kano State has been one of the most affected, suffering significant grand corruption over the past eight years.
“The state’s investments and assets, infrastructure, water resources, education, and revenue generation, among other sectors, have all suffered severe setbacks due to the grand corruption that has taken place over the years,” Governor Yusuf stated.
Despite these challenges, the governor asserted that under his leadership, Kano has distinguished itself among its peers in terms of transparency, accountability, and probity in governance. He reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption, which remains sacrosanct.
Speaking earlier, Kano State Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, described corruption as a lack of accountability and transparency in service delivery. He emphasized that the training was intended to equip Directors with the knowledge necessary to combat corruption and to pass this knowledge down to their subordinates.
He reminded all Directors that they are entrusted with the management of public services across the state and that they must display a high level of integrity, serving as role models for their subordinates.
Also addressing the participants, Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, explained that the workshop was aimed at Directors of MDAs because many forms of government corruption are often executed through civil servants.
He noted that by educating civil servants on how to deliver their services transparently and accountably, corruption can be significantly reduced, not only in Kano State but across the nation.
