The Kasham Community Development Initiative has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of Fatima and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, describing the incident as a tragic reflection of weakening community vigilance and responsibility.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director, Dinatu Dama Maji, the organization expressed deep concern over the growing sense of insecurity, particularly among women in communities where collective responsibility and community action are neglected.
According to Maji, Fatima’s desperate cries for help prior to her death went unheeded by neighbors, who failed to alert the local vigilante or the nearest police division. She stressed that timely community intervention could have saved the victims and aided the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
“This is a call to community members and residents of Kano State to take responsibility for each other’s safety,” she emphasized. “Being responsible for your neighbor’s security is being responsible for your own.”
The organization urged that community security initiatives should be initiated, driven, and owned by residents themselves, promoting mutual awareness and swift response to threats.
Maji also called on the government to strengthen and support local community security systems, with deliberate inclusion of women in early warning and information-sharing processes.
“Many women operate their businesses from home,” she noted, “and this positions them to provide critical early warning information that can help mitigate security threats.”
The statement concluded with a renewed commitment from the organization to work with stakeholders in enhancing community safety and ensuring justice for Fatima and her children.
