KNSG Urges N’ASS Police Affairs Committee to Tackle Northwest Farming Insecurity

By Mustapha Salisu

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has decried the impact of insecurity on farming activities and rural communities in the northwest, urging the National Assembly’s House Committee on Police Affairs to address the crisis with urgency.

Speaking through his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, during a courtesy visit by the committee to the Kano State Government House on Monday, Governor Yusuf lamented that five of the seven states in the northwest zone are engulfed in violence, including kidnappings and banditry.

He highlighted that these challenges have made it nearly impossible for peasant farmers to access their farms or live securely, thereby threatening food security and livelihoods.

The Governor appealed to the committee to prioritize the plight of rural communities in their deliberations and ensure the effective use of resources allocated to the police for improved security.

Governor Yusuf acknowledged the contributions of federal investments in Kano’s police infrastructure, such as the Police Academy in Wudil, Police Secondary School in Shanono, and a newly established facility in Kabo Local Government Area.

He commended the Kano State Police Command for its efforts in maintaining peace and security, noting that the state government recently donated over 70 vehicles to support their operations.

“The police remain the most visible force in our communities, and their role is crucial to sustaining peace,” he said.

Earlier speaking, Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, Abubakar Miki Yalleman, explained that the visit was part of the committee’s oversight functions to assess the Kano Police Command.

He praised the state’s visionary leadership and its collaboration with security agencies, which has made Kano a beacon of peace in the northwest.

Yalleman also emphasized the need for deeper synergy between the committee and the state government to address security challenges effectively.
