KPF Launches Tree Planting Campaign to Combat Environmental Degradation

By Mustapha Salisu

As part of efforts to address the pressing issue of environmental degradation in Kano State, the Kano Patriot Front (KPF) has launched its inaugural tree planting campaign.

The event, held on Tuesday at the Fagge Local Government Islamic Centre, Tudun Boguwa, brought together industry experts and stakeholders to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of KPF, Major General Ibrahim Sani (Rtd), highlighted the alarming rise in environmental pollution due to activities such as gas flaring, deforestation, and air pollution.

He emphasized that these actions contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, which shields the Earth from harmful radiation.

“We felt compelled to take action and educate the public about the significance of tree planting. Trees play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by exchanging carbon dioxide and oxygen with animals, ensuring a healthy environment and promoting economic sustainability” General Sani stated.

The Chairman disclosed that to support the campaign, KPF has collaborated with various partners to secure seedlings of economically valuable trees, including moringa and other crops. These seedlings will be distributed for planting, contributing to both environmental restoration and economic benefits.

Professor Inuwa Shehu Usman, Chairman of the Agriculture and Food Security Committee of KPF, emphasized the urgency of addressing deforestation and desert encroachment in the state.

He warned that many plant species endemic to the region are facing extinction due to human activities.

“If we do not take immediate action to protect our environment, we risk losing valuable resources like locust beans, baobab, and shea butter. This tree planting campaign serves as a wake-up call to remind people of the vital role trees play in building a healthy environment and ensuring economic prosperity” Professor Usman cautioned.
