League of Northern Democrats Constitutes Committee to Review Tax Reform Bills

By Umar Dankano, Yola

The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has formed a technical committee to review the proposed tax reform bills and provide informed recommendations on their implications.

In a press statement issued by the League’s Spokesman, Mallam Ladan Salihu, the move was attributed to widespread concerns and controversies surrounding the tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly. Salihu emphasized that the committee was tasked with analyzing the bills clause by clause to determine their potential impact on both the Northern region and the nation as a whole.

“This initiative highlights our commitment to ensuring that legislation reflects the principles of justice, equity, and prosperity for all Nigerians. Our primary goal is to safeguard the developmental interests of our people,” he noted.

The committee, comprising Northern experts in law, public accounting, legislation, and academia, has been given one week to complete its comprehensive review. Their work will focus on identifying provisions deemed harmful or inequitable, proposing amendments where necessary, and ensuring the bills uphold constitutional, cultural, and religious values while promoting national unity and fairness.

Upon completing its assignment, the committee will publicly present its findings in an electronic and tabular format, ensuring accessibility to policymakers, legislators, the media, and the public. The League expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to provide well-reasoned recommendations aimed at fostering sustainable development and equitable economic growth across Nigeria.

The statement urged Nigerians to remain attentive to the League’s upcoming public presentation, which will provide clear insights into the tax reform bills and outline their proposed policy positions. It reaffirmed the League’s dedication to advocating for policies that promote justice, prosperity, and unity in Northern Nigeria and the country at large.

The transmission of the tax reform bills to the National Assembly by the executive arm of government has sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians accusing the federal government of insensitivity to their economic and social challenges.
