LG Autonomy: Jigawa to Conduct LG Elections Soon – JG Govt

From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse

The Jigawa executive council has requested the State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) to conduct Local Government elections.

This was announced by the Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Alhaji Sagir Musa Ahmed, while briefing the press on the outcome of the council meeting held on Wednesday at Government House, Dutse.

He explained that the council’s decision aligns with Section 197 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission Law No. 3 of 2012 (as amended), which mandate the Commission to conduct Local Government Councils elections for the offices of Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Councillors across the 27 LGAs of the state.

The commissioner emphasized that the council’s decision also complies with the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s judgment on Local Government Councils, which mandates that all Local Government Areas in Nigeria must have democratically elected officials, and elections must be conducted in all states within three months.
