Maulid 2024: A tribute to the teachings of Islam on treating women

By Aliyu Samba

Islam is a religion that uplifts and honours women, granting them dignity, rights, and a purposeful life. When Prophet Muhammad (SAW), sent as a mercy to all of mankind, brought the divine message of Islam, he found a world steeped in darkness. During the Jahiliyya period, women were stripped of their basic rights and treated as mere objects of exploitation. In some cases, newborn girls were even buried alive to spare their families from perceived shame.

But with the arrival of Islam, these injustices were abolished, and the light of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) spread across the globe. Women were granted respect, freedom, and justice.

Islam is the reason:

I – A woman receives her rightful share of inheritance from her parents and spouse.
II – A woman has the right to education and personal development.
III – A mother is honoured, and her children’s path to heaven depends on how well they respect her.
IV – A woman can choose to stay in a marriage or leave if she is not treated well.
V – A woman can work, engage in trade, and pursue her career aspirations.
VI – A woman has the right to choose her spouse freely.
VII – A woman in a polygamous marriage must be treated with fairness and equal care by her husband. His success in the Hereafter depends on how he fulfils this responsibility.
VIII – A woman is protected from all forms of abuse, exploitation, and oppression, regardless of the man’s status or wealth.
IX – A man is obligated to support, protect, and provide for a woman, standing as a pillar of strength in her life.

All of these rights and more are thanks to Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “The best of you are those who are best to their families.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3895)

Let us follow the example of the Prophet (SAW), embrace his teachings, and strive to make this world a better place where women are cherished and valued, just as Islam has prescribed.
