May Day: KNSG Announces Housing Scheme for Workers

In commemoration of International Workers’ Day, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State announced plans to establish a comprehensive housing scheme for workers in the state.

The initiative according to Governor Yusuf, which falls under the National Housing Fund Scheme, aims to provide decent and affordable shelter for workers.

The Governor disclosed this development today during the International Workers’ Day celebrations held at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano

Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers.

Yusuf announced that the state government is prepared to allocate land for the housing project as soon as discussions with stakeholders are concluded.

The Governor proudly acknowledged Kano as the birthplace of May Day in Nigeria and reiterated his administration’s dedication to implementing policies and programs that motivate the working class to deliver quality service for the state’s development.

Governor Yusuf however unbundled some of the initiatives implemented by the government including prompt salary and pension payments, settlement of workers’ gratuities, renovation of offices as well as resumption/payment of monthly operational funds across the agencies of government and regular promotions.

Other programs include recruiting new workers, screening and confirming 10,000 workers employed by the previous administration, providing Ramadan food assistance to civil servants, and supporting workers’ capacity building.

The Governor urged workers to reciprocate the gesture by demonstrating commitment and dedication to their duties while highlighting his administration’s priority areas, including education, agriculture, and healthcare development.

Speaking earlier, the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, congratulated the Governor on his Supreme Court victory and appealed for urgent intervention in addressing the backlog of unremitted pension contributions by some organizations, which poses a significant threat to retirees’ financial security.

He also requested the payment of outstanding wage awards, the constitution of a Governing Board for the state pension contributory scheme, implementation of local government autonomy, and reintroduction of vehicle loans for civil servants.

PRIME TIME NEWS Correspondent, Mustapha Salisu, reporting from the office of the Kano State Deputy Governor, reports that a massive crowd gathered for the event, comprising thousands of workers, high-ranking government officials, and representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), and other key stakeholders, all united to commemorate the occasion.
