Meet Halima Usman Jibrin, the inspiring force behind ‘Blind Kitchen’

Despite being visually impaired, her culinary journey began at a young age, fueled by a genuine passion for cooking instilled by her family. From selling cakes to preparing diverse dishes, Halima navigates her kitchen using touch, taste, smell, and hearing. Challenges, like cake decoration, don’t deter her spirit.

While her relatives support her, societal reactions vary from positive astonishment to skepticism. Undeterred, Halima aspires to expand globally, establish a restaurant, and launch a catering school. Balancing her Mass Communication studies, she remains active on multiple social media platforms, managing them independently with assistive technology.

Halima receives diverse orders, sometimes up to 50 a day, efficiently handled with support from her sisters and mother. Her message to people with disabilities echoes empowerment—urging them to pursue their passions. Not only is Halima breaking barriers in her cooking venture, but she also dreams of becoming a journalist, maintaining both passions.

With unwavering support from friends, including a sighted best friend, and having trained around 70 individuals, Halima’s impact extends beyond her kitchen. Commendations from satisfied customers affirm the quality of her creations. Starting her business with a modest ₦10,000, Halima now fulfills orders exceeding $100, particularly during special occasions.

As Halima envisions a future in journalism, owning a restaurant, and running a culinary school, her final message encourages individuals with disabilities to explore business opportunities and pursue education. Her journey exemplifies resilience, determination, and the ability to turn dreams into reality.
