Most Kano Residents Now Enjoy Steady Water Supply – Commissioner

By Abdullahi Yusuf

Kano State Government says it has immensely improved water supply as 75 per cent of residents of the state now get portable drinking water.

The State Commissioner of Water Resources, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Kano on Thursday.

Makoda said water supply was as low as 25 per cent when the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration assumed office in the state on May 29,2023, which compelled the government to embark on efforts to improve the situation.

He said the government is spending over N1.2 billion monthly to supply portable drinking water to nooks and crannies of the state.

In the last one year, he said, the state government had boosted the operations of the Challawa, Watari and Tamburawa Water Treatment Plants, adding that the facilities are now working “perfectly well.”

The commissioner recalled that the Government had released ₦502 million for the purchase of 10 water pumps for the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants to further improve their operations.

He also disclosed that the government
had purchased trucks worth about N450 million as part of its efforts to revive the operations of the State Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency(WRECA).

Similarly, he said, the government had approved the procurement of five Tanks for the agency to boost its operations.

Makoda said the State Government was making efforts to ensure the security of its water installations,in view of the recent threats to them by vandals.

Such threats he said, came during the recent nationwide anti-hunger protests when the government received intelligence reports that some hoodlums were planning to vandalize the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, but which the commissioner said was promptly aborted.
