NAKLAWS Plead for Urgent Scholarship Disbursement as Law School Session Approaches
By Mustapha Salisu
The National Association of Kano Law Students (NAKLAWS), has issued a desperate plea to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, urging him to disburse promised scholarships before the commencement of the Law School’s 2024 academic session in less than four weeks.
In an open letter signed by NAKLAWS and shared to PRIME TIME NEWS on Tuesday by Abubakar Ahmad Nasidi, The Association detailed their previous request for scholarships submitted through the Secretary to the State Government.
The Governor had granted their plea, directing them to the state’s scholarship board for necessary documentation, which they successfully completed.
However, a recent hike in the Law School registration fee from N296,000 to N476,000 has thrown a wrench in their plans.
“This huge increment compels us to again seek your intervention towards disbursing the funds to us before the session begins,” the letter pleads.
NAKLAWS emphasizes the dire situation of its members, highlighting that even at the previous fee, many struggled to gather the funds. With the unexpected increase, “regrettably, not up to 10 students from NAKLAWS, with close to 100 members, have been able to pay the registration fees,” the letter reveals.
Citing Governor Yusuf’s well-known prioritization of education, NAKLAWS implores him to consider their plight and provide urgent assistance.
“We believe this intervention will reaffirm your commitment to empowering young Kano indigenes to pursue their legal aspirations,”
The letter concludes, expressing hope that it reaches the Governor’s desk for a positive response.
