By Hajara Abdullahi

The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS), National Headquarters, Abuja, has condoled with the family, the judiciary, and the Muslim community over the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, who died in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Confirming the incident, a source close to the family told The Guardian Newspaper that the former CJN passed away in a Saudi Arabian hospital. “Ex-CJN Tanko Muhammad is dead. He passed away this morning at a Saudi Arabian hospital,” the source disclosed.

In a condolence statement issued on December 16, 2025, NAMLAS described Justice Tanko’s death as a colossal loss to the legal profession, the Muslim community, and the nation at large. “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” part of the statement read.

The association praised the late jurist for exemplifying the highest ideals of the Bench—fairness, courage, and fidelity to the rule of law. It noted that during his tenure as Chief Justice, he carried out his responsibilities “with wisdom and restraint, leaving behind a legacy of service that will continue to guide generations of legal practitioners.”

NAMLAS extended heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues in the judiciary, and the Muslim Ummah, while offering prayers for Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, dedicated several decades to the Nigerian judiciary, rising through the ranks to the nation’s highest judicial office before his retirement.
