Her recent visit to Kano, under the invitation of Maryam Abacha American University Group of Universities President and Founder Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo confirmed to a testimony and hardworking of a young Man changing the narratives of education and impact in Nigeria and Africa. For Her honoring and physical being presence left a huge historic landmark in Kano and Nigeria’s political history.

Her Early Life and Education

Born on September 21, 1960, Senator Tinubu emerged as the twelfth child in a family of thirteen, hailing from the esteemed Ikusebiala family of Ogun State. Her educational journey began at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode, where she obtained her West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Exam (WASSCE) in 1979. Senator Tinubu pursued further education, earning a B.S. in Education from the University of Ife and a National Certificate of Education in Botany and Zoology from the Adeyemi College of Education. Her academic pursuits laid the foundation for her future endeavors in education and public service.

Political Career and Philanthropic Initiatives

Senator Tinubu’s foray into politics coincided with her husband’s ascendancy as Governor of Lagos State, where she served as the First Lady from 1999 to 2007. On Monday, 12 February 2024, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, marked a significant milestone as she inaugurated the School of Law Building at the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in Kano. The building, proudly named in her honor, stands as a testament to her enduring commitment to education and societal development.

During the unveiling ceremony, Mrs. Tinubu expressed her gratitude towards Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, the Founder of MAAUN, for the esteemed recognition. Her satisfaction with the state-of-the-art facilities showcased her dedication to fostering academic excellence and empowering the youth.

In her address, the First Lady emphasized the pivotal role of education in liberating individuals and driving progress. She pledged a generous N50 million endowment fund for the university’s top-performing law graduates, encouraging students to pursue excellence and contribute meaningfully to society.

Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, in his remarks, reiterated MAAUN’s vision of becoming a globally renowned institution for teaching, research, and service. He underscored the university’s mission to nurture future leaders and industry pioneers through accessible, high-quality education.

Following the ceremony, Mrs. Tinubu toured the newly inaugurated facility and the esteemed Murtala Ramat Mohammed library, witnessing firsthand the university’s dedication to academic excellence and student welfare.

Accompanied by esteemed dignitaries including Kano State Governon Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, former First Lady Hajia Maryam Sani Abacha, Minister of State for FCT Dr. Mariya Bunkure, Senators, Governors and national chief security wives and other prominent figures. Mrs. Tinubu’s visit underscored the collaborative effort towards advancing education and empowering future generations.

For the fist lady of Nigeria, the occasion held personal significance, as she fondly recalled her time spent in Kano during her mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) assignment in 1982. Her journey from serving in Kano to being honored in the same city epitomizes the transformative power of dedication and service to the nation.
