NAWOJ Solicits free medicals for survivors of GBV

The Plateau State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ has called on the State Government and healthcare providers to subsidised or offer free medical services for survivors of gender-based violence.
Chairperson of the Association, Grace Akwe Gotip, made the appeal in Jos on Wednesday, during activities marking the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, with the theme “End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls.”
Grace Gotip, led members during an awareness walk to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital in the company of two survivors needing urgent medical attention.
She explained that One of them, Chidinma Augustine, a sexual assault survivor who is five months pregnant, has reportedly been abandoned by the alleged perpetrator. Gotip said Chidinma, the only surviving child in a family of nine, urgently requires antenatal care and psychological support.
According to Gotip, the second survivor, Justina, sustained severe eye injuries after an assault by her boyfriend. NAWOJ is advocating for routine check-ups and treatment to prevent long-term complications.
The state Chairperson said NAWOJ remains committed to justice for survivors and called for stronger protection systems for women and girls across the state.
Also speaking, Plateau NUJ Chairman, Ayuku Pwaspo, warned about rising cases of online abuse and urged victims to speak out.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Dr. Christopher Nyiagwan, represented by the medical Advisory Committee Chairman, Dr. Saidu Barnabas, assured that both survivors will receive comprehensive medical care.
Our correspondent reports that the 45 minutes awareness walk started from the NUJ Press Centre in company of the Federal Road safety Corps officers who helped in controlling traffic for easy and faster movement, the boys brigade Nigeria also thrilled the NAWOJ members with music which lightened the awareness walk.
