From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu

The North East Development Commission (NEDC), has commenced a 3-day workshop in Maiduguri to train journalists and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on non-kinetic approaches to addressing insurgency in the North East.

Declaring the workshop open, the NEDC Managing Director, Alhaji Mohammad Alkali, represented by Mohammed Sani Umar, Head of Resettlement and Early Recovery, said the training aims to equip journalists and CSOs with the skills to contribute to peacebuilding and sustainable development in the region.

“Journalism holds immense power in shaping narratives, amplifying voices, and bridging understanding in a region as dynamic as the North East. This workshop will equip participants with tools, strategies, and ethical insights to address the unique challenges of reporting in conflict-affected areas,” Umar stated.

He emphasized the importance of non-kinetic approaches, which focus on addressing the root causes of insurgency, fostering community resilience, and promoting long-term stability.

Abba Musa, Head of Corporate Services Development at NEDC, highlighted the workshop’s significance in complementing military efforts. He noted that 100 journalists and CSOs from the six North East states are participating, with a focus on peacebuilding, community partnerships, and conflict resolution.

“While military interventions have played a role, non-kinetic strategies like community engagement, partnerships, and peacebuilding are essential to ending the 15-year-old insurgency,” Musa added.

The workshop features presentations on topics such as conflict-sensitive reporting, media engagement for policy influence, investigative journalism techniques, and the role of media in reconciliation and reintegration. Key resource persons include Prof. Umar Pate, Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Kashere.
