From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu
During a recent visit to inspect the flood-affected areas in Yobe and other parts of the North-Eastern states, Alhaji Muhammad G. Alkali, Managing Director of the North-Eastern Development Agency (NEDC), announced plans to support and repair roads damaged by the floods in Yobe State and across the region.
The visit included assessments of the extensive damage in Nangere, Tarmuwa, and Gujba local government areas, as well as key roads such as Potiskum Road to Gashuwa, Damaturu to Gashuwa, Geidam, and Damaturu Road to Biu in Borno State.
Speaking to the press, Alhaji Alkali assured the affected communities that he would present their appeals and complaints to the federal government. He emphasized the urgency of addressing the hardships caused by the floods and the need for timely intervention to alleviate the pressures faced by the local population.
“The NEDC board will make every effort to provide emergency assistance to these communities and ensure that the damaged roads are rebuilt, particularly in the most severely affected areas,” Alkali stated. He also extended his condolences to those impacted by the floods, urging them to view this event as a test from Allah SWT.
During his visit, the NEDC Managing Director also inspected the construction of the agency’s office in Damaturu and a large teaching and meeting room being built at Yobe State University, part of the NEDC’s broader efforts to support education in the North-East region.
Malam Mustapha, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Tarmuwa Local Government, appealed to the Federal Government, the Yobe State Government, and the NEDC to expedite repairs to the flood-damaged roads. He highlighted the severe impact on local communities, including the loss of more than 200 farms.
Alhaji Alkali was accompanied on the visit by senior officers of the agency, including Dr. Ali Abbas, the Chief Officer for Yobe State, and other officials.
