The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a safety advisory urging residents to keep a safe distance from live electrical wires and avoid touching anyone who is in contact with electricity.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the commission stressed that electricity is extremely dangerous and warned that attempting to rescue a victim without proper precautions could lead to further injuries or fatalities.
“Safety first: Don’t become the next victim,” NERC cautioned. “Electricity is powerful and does not discriminate. If you see a live wire on the ground or witness someone being electrocuted, your first instinct may be to help immediately. However, touching the victim with bare hands or trying to pull them away could cause the current to pass through you as well.”
The commission outlined key safety measures for the public. It advised residents never to touch a live wire or an electrocuted victim directly, to maintain a safe distance while ensuring others do the same, and to promptly notify the nearest electricity distribution company (DisCo) or emergency services.
NERC urged members of the public to act responsibly and allow trained professionals to handle electrical emergencies, noting that adherence to these guidelines could save lives and prevent additional accidents.
The advisory forms part of the commission’s ongoing public awareness campaign aimed at promoting electrical safety and reducing incidents caused by fallen power lines and other related hazards. Residents were encouraged to share the message to help protect their families and communities.
