The Master Bakers and Caterers Association of Nigeria, Kano State chapter, says its members will improve the quality of their bread to reflect the current market price of flour.
The pledge is contained in a Communique issued at the end of a meeting held between officials of the association and the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission, Barr. Muhuyi Rimin-Gado.
According to the communique which was signed by Barr. Rimin-Gado, and the Chairman and Secretary of the association, agreed during the meeting to improve the quality of the bread by increasing its gram “to reflect the reduction in the price of flour.”
“Sequel to the numerous complaints from the general public and the outcry on the social media alleging that despite sharp reduction in the price of bag of flour, there is no corresponding reduction in the price of bread, the Executive Chairman of Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, invited the Kano State executives of the Master Bakers and Caterers Association of Nigeria for a meeting.
“The meeting was with a view to finding the actual situation of things and resolving the issue in the best interest of the good people of Kano State,” the document said.
According to the communique, the meeting was fruitful and that the two parties debunked the claim in the public domain that bakers were buying a bag of flour at N90,000.
They also agreed that since the intervention of the Kano State Government through the commission in 2024, the bakers were buying a bag of flour at N60,000.
“That in recognition of the approaching of the Holy month of Ramadan, some flour companies compassionately reduced the bag price of flour by N2,000.
“And this reduction only takes effect last week. That the meeting notes that, apart from flour, there are other key ingredients that are used necessary in the making bread, the price of which has not declined.
“These ingredients include sugar, oil, butter, firewood etc, while the meeting appreciates and commends the flour companies for making the discount in their bag prices, it notes that the N2000 reduction on flour price, taking into cognizance the price of other ingredients, is not enough to cause a reduction in the price of bread.
“However, the Association agreed to improve the quality of its bread by increasing its gram to reflect the reduction in the price of flour,” the communique said.
It added that the commission would further meet with the Singer Market Traders Association to ensure steady supply of flour and in compliance with the price reduction made by the companies.
