NEXIM Moves to Boost Agricultural Exports in Jigawa

From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse

In an effort to promote the export of agricultural products and boost the local economy, the Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) organized a one-day Exporter Enlightenment Forum in Jigawa State.

Speaking at the event, NEXIM Managing Director, Mr. Abba Bello, highlighted the opportunities and potential for exporting non-oil goods from Jigawa State to international markets. Represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Khalil Gaga at the forum held in Gumel Local Government Area, Bello noted that Jigawa has a significant advantage in agricultural production, positioning it as a leading state for non-oil exports from Nigeria.

“Despite Jigawa’s vast agricultural potential, it remains one of the states struggling with high poverty rates,” Bello said. “We organized this forum to educate the people of Jigawa on how they can leverage our bank’s facilities to start exporting agricultural products like sesame and hibiscus, which are abundantly produced in the state.”

He added that NEXIM is guiding the community on the processes, rules, and regulations for exporting products to foreign markets, inviting individuals and groups to reach out for more detailed support. According to Bello, promoting exports will enhance local skills, create jobs, and stimulate wealth creation, growth, and development in Jigawa.

Senator Babangida Hussaini, representing Jigawa Northwest and serving as the special guest of honor at the forum, remarked on the premium quality of Jigawa’s hibiscus and sesame in the global market. However, he lamented that the people of Jigawa are not fully benefiting from these commodities’ export potential.

Senator Babangida pledged to continue working with NEXIM to strengthen the skills and capacity of Jigawa’s residents, aiming to maximize these export opportunities for poverty reduction, job creation, and sustainable development.
