In a heartwarming display of humanitarianism, the Foundation for Social Orientation and Gender Development (FOSOGED), a non-governmental organization based in Kano, partnered with Bruderhilfe Social Development Initiative to distribute 50 Tricycle Wheelchairs, medical equipment, books, and toys to persons with disabilities, hospitals, schools, and orphanage homes in Kano.

The event, held on Monday, commenced with opening remarks from FOSOGED’s Executive Director, Hajiya Mariya Inuwa Duruminiya, who explained that the gesture stemmed from the foundation’s core principle of giving back to the community.

She disclosed that the items were provided through a collaboration with the German-based NGO Bruderhilfe Social Development Initiative, facilitated by a member of FOSOGED’s Board of Trustees, Alhaji Ahmad Bashir Borodo, during a business trip to Germany.

Mariya further revealed that FOSOGED received 50 Tricycle wheelchairs, medical equipment (facemasks, hand gloves, and thermometers) for women and children, books for primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, as well as toys for orphanage homes.

“We have identified 50 persons with disabilities to receive the Tricycle Wheelchairs, while Hasiya BayerobPaediatric hospital, Murtala, Jakara, and Marmara specialist hospitals, among others, are among the health facilities that will benefit from the medical equipment. Additionally, selected government-owned primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions will receive the books, and the toys will be distributed to the Nasarawa Orphanage home,” Inuwa explained.

The founder of Bruderhilfe Social Development Initiative, Madam Mary Bruder, also addressed the gathering, revealing that her organization, established in 2017, has been providing humanitarian assistance in the areas of health, education, and support for persons with disabilities in rural communities across Nigeria from its base in Germany.

Bruder acknowledged the challenges posed by insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North, which has deterred many international NGOs from operating in the country. She noted that as a result, many NGOs have diverted their donations to other African countries, such as Ghana.

“I decided to take the initiative and give back to my homeland (Nigeria). We have provided humanitarian assistance to 11 states, including Lagos, Kwara, Bauchi, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina,” Bruder revealed.

The President commended FOSOGED for its unwavering commitment to providing humanitarian services to the community, emphasizing that Bruderhilfe only collaborates with serious and honest foundations, which it has found in FOSOGD.

In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero, represented by the Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida, Alh. Lamido Abdullahi Sunusi, expressed his appreciation to FOSOGED for its humanitarian services and commended Alhaji Ahmad Bashir Borodo for bringing the Bruderhilfe foundation to Kano.

He urged the beneficiaries to use the donated items judiciously and cautioned against selling them for personal gain.

Khadija Suraj Adamu, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to FOSOGED for its timely intervention and encouraged other NGOs and philanthropists to follow suit in making persons with disabilities feel included and valued in society.
