By Mustapha Salisu

In an effort to address misconceptions at the grassroots level tied to menstruation and period generally, an NGO, the Kasham Girls, Women, Youth and Community Development Network (KGWYCDN) distributed sanitary pads to 170 street hawkers within the Kano metropolis.

The event tagged ‘Period Fiesta’ and distribution of the sanitary pad took place today within some selected locations in the state starting from Maiduguri Road to YanKaba Market and Yankaba Park as well as Tarauni Market.

Speaking to PRIME TIME NEWS after the distribution exercise, KASHAM’s Executive Director, Dinatu Dama Maji explained that the locations selected above are because they have the highest numbers of street hawkers.

While sensitizing the young girls

“The numbers were gathered as a result of a baseline survey conducted, which revealed that these locations have the highest numbers of street hawkers” Dinatu added.

She further revealed that the organization was able to distribute the sanitary pads to 170 street hawkers out of the 200 target.

Dinatu boasted about the sensitization aspect of the exercise, at least 70% of the young girls were convinced because they had room to ask questions directly to the Organization.

“While they seek for clarification, we equally counter misconceptions with medical and health proof as well as sensitizing them with basic health education knowledge” Dinatu noted.

However, She called on the State Government seeking the implementation of a Child Protection Law as well as endeavour to subsidize the price of sanitary pads.

Dinatu also urged parents to see it as a mandate towards providing sanitary pads and bar soaps for their daughters to observe a healthy and sanitized menstruation cycle monthly.
