NNPP backs Atiku’s merger proposal

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has welcomed a proposal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for opposition parties to merge in order to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the NNPP’s Acting National Chairman, Abba Ali, described Abubakar’s call as “patriotic and a welcome development.”

“We unreservedly commend the former Vice President for this initiative,” Ali said.

Ali noted that a merger of opposition parties had been successful in the past, citing the defeat of the then-ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by the APC in the 2015 elections.

“The NNPP is fully embracing this initiative and applauding it as a matter of necessity,” Ali said.

“However, we are also looking at this issue from a much larger perspective and considering all factors inherent in it.”

Ali did not elaborate on what specific factors the NNPP was considering, but he said that the party was committed to working with other opposition parties to achieve a united front against the APC.

“We are confident that a united opposition can defeat the APC in 2027,” Ali said.

“We are calling on all opposition parties to put aside their differences and come together for the sake of Nigeria.”
