Northern Governors Unite Over Mokwa Flood Tragedy, Call for Swift Action

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has described the devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State as a national tragedy, urging coordinated efforts for relief and prevention of future disasters.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Northern Governors, Governor Yahaya extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State following the catastrophic flooding on Wednesday, 28th May 2025, caused by torrential rains.
The disaster claimed numerous lives, left many missing, displaced hundreds, and ravaged homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure.
According to statement Governor Yahaya commended the prompt response by the Niger State Government, led by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, and the efforts of emergency agencies in providing aid to victims.
He called for collective action involving individuals, organizations, and development partners to bring immediate relief and long-term solutions.
“This tragedy underscores the growing threat of climate-induced disasters. We must adopt sustainable flood control measures and build resilience to protect lives and livelihoods across Northern Nigeria,” Governor Yahaya remarked.
The Gombe State Governor assured unwavering support for the recovery efforts and emphasized the importance of learning from this incident to prevent future occurrences.
“As we mourn with the bereaved and support the displaced, we stand ready to work with Niger State to ensure such disasters are mitigated in the future,” he affirmed.
