NPC Chairman Steps Down after Tenure Completion

The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Kwarra, has on Tuesday, officially handed over the leadership of the commission to the Federal Commissioner representing Niger state, Muhammad Dattijo, following the completion of his five year tenure.

The handover which took place at the NPC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, was attended by the head of the Commission which includes Federal Commissioners, the Director General, Directors, and staff.

In a statement released by the commission on Wednesday morning, the ex-chairman expressed his sincere appreciation to his colleagues and subordinates for their cooperation and support.

The statement reads “Hon. Kwarra expressed appreciation to the Federal Commissioners, Management and Staff of the NPC for their unwavering support and dedication throughout his five-year tenure, highlighting the commission’s strides in strengthening data collection systems, digitizing Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system and advancing preparations for the forthcoming national Population and Housing Census”

The symbolic event was celebrated with farewell messages, a group photograph, tributes, and the presentation of gifts to Kwarra.

Kwarra ,who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari led the commission at a critical time when Nigeria, was preparing to conduct a national census after two decades. However, the census scheduled for April 2023 was postponed by President Buhari.

Dattijo will lead the commission as acting chairman before the swearing in of the new chairman, Hon. Aminu Yusuf.

The incoming chairman who was approved on October 21,2025,by the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population, Chaired by Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central),is expected to lead the nation towards the long awaited census which is vital to fair allocation of resources accurate data backed planning.
