NUJ Inaugurates Kano Online Media Chapel, a First in Northern Nigeria
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has made history by inaugurating the Kano Online Media Chapel, making Kano State the first in Northern Nigeria to establish such a body after the 2022 amendment of the NUJ constitution officially recognizing online media platforms.
The inauguration ceremony, held on April 27, was presided over by veteran journalist Alhaji Ahmad Aminu, chairman of the inauguration committee. With over five decades of experience, Alhaji Aminu highlighted the growing role of social media in today’s information landscape and commended the Kano State Ministry of Information under Comrade Ibrahim Waiya for successfully bringing online journalists together.
In his address, Alhaji Aminu urged online media practitioners to uphold the principles of reliability, objectivity, and professionalism.
He also encouraged stronger collaboration between online platforms and traditional media, which in Kano include more than 30 radio and television stations. Expressing concern over the rise of disrespectful discourse among youths on digital platforms, he emphasized the need for adherence to journalistic ethics and the prioritization of societal development over sensationalism.
Speaking at the event, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, described April 27 as a historic day for journalism in the state. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to media reforms, stressing the importance of restoring professionalism to the sector.
“We support this process and aim to bring reforms to the information sector. What is happening in the media space is quite unfortunate, and unless critical stakeholders come together, change will remain elusive. We do not want Kano to be left behind,” Waiya stated.
The Kano Online Media Chapel is now open for registration by online practitioners, with a focus on fostering unity and enhancing professional capacity among its members.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo of Independent Post, expressed gratitude and underscored the importance of digital platforms in shaping the future of journalism.
“We are not here to compete with traditional media—we are here to complement, innovate, and lead the way in responsible, ethical, and impactful journalism in the digital age,” he said. Dangambo pledged to promote professionalism, unity, and the highest standards of truth and integrity within the online media community.
He also thanked the NUJ leadership at the national and Kano council levels for their support in establishing the chapel.
The newly inaugurated executives, who took the oath of office administered by NUJ Kano Council Chairman, Comrade Suleiman A. Dederi, are:
