From Tongnaan Bawa, Jos
Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Chapter, have been encouraged to embrace fish farming and aquaculture as viable means of achieving self-reliance and boosting economic growth.
Speaking at the training workshop marking the commencement of the 2025 Press Week in Jos, the Chairman of the NUJ Plateau State Council, Ayuku Pwaspo, said the initiative was designed to equip journalists with practical skills that could open up alternative income streams.
Facilitator of the workshop and renowned fish farmer, Dr. Samuel Adetunji — popularly known as “Dr. Fish” — outlined the benefits of farming catfish, tilapia and pangasius, stressing that aquaculture offers opportunities for household income generation and economic diversification.
Also speaking at the event, NUJ National Auditor, Tongnaan Dada Bawa, urged Nigerians to take advantage of opportunities in aquaculture amid rising insecurity in the job market and declining white-collar employment.
Chairman of the 2025 Press Week Committee, John Farinola, called on participants to sustain their commitment beyond the training by applying the lessons learned to improve livelihoods and strengthen community resilience.
