Okowa: Tinubu Should Complete Eight Years for Nigeria’s Stability

Ifeanyi Okowa, the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should be allowed to complete two terms in office in the interest of national stability.

Speaking on The Morning Show, a programme on Arise TV aired on Tuesday, the former Delta State governor emphasized that continuity in leadership would benefit the country.

“For the stability of this nation, I believe it is best for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was elected in 2023, to complete his eight-year tenure. Thereafter, the presidency can return to the north,” Okowa said. “I believe that is the right thing, while not necessarily framing it as a north-south issue.”

Okowa recently defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and other prominent political figures in Delta State.

Speaking on political zoning and regional rotation of power, Okowa said politics in Nigeria has evolved beyond strict north-south divisions.

“Politics today may no longer be strictly defined by the north-south dichotomy. In every political party, there are credible contenders from both regions,” he noted.

Addressing his defection, Okowa revealed that the decision to join the APC was nearly unanimous among key PDP stakeholders in Delta State.

“When we went into the meeting, we considered the APC and other coalitions. It was a near-unanimous decision that we should move into the APC,” he said.

On April 23, Okowa, Oborevwori, and several PDP stalwarts officially joined the APC. Days later, Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, announced that the APC structure in Delta State is now fully under the governor’s control.
