One Year On, Governor Yusuf Yet to Inaugurate Kano Elders Council Amid Growing Calls for Kwankwaso, Ganduje Reconciliation

By Salisu Hamisu Ali

A year has passed since Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, pledged to establish the Kano Elders Council, but the promise remains unfulfilled.

In early 2024, Governor Yusuf announced plans to form the council, envisioned as a body comprising former governors, senior judges, and key stakeholders. Its primary role would be to provide advisory support to the state government on governance and development matters.

The announcement came shortly after Governor Yusuf’s victory at the Supreme Court, which validated his electoral mandate. However, despite widespread anticipation, the council has yet to be inaugurated.

Notably, Lagos State operates a similar council of state elders, which serves as a platform for fostering governance continuity and resolving disputes.

The proposal to establish the Kano Elders Council was met with enthusiasm by many residents, who viewed it as a mechanism to address potential conflicts and promote unity across the state.

The delay in its implementation coincides with increasing calls for reconciliation between former Kano State governors, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, whose strained relationship has often influenced the state’s political landscape.

Efforts to obtain comments from Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to inquiries at the time of filing this report.
