In a bid to sustain its status as an Open Defecation Free (ODF) state, the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA), in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has trained 170 Faecal Sludge Emptiers and other environmental protection workers across the state.
The Managing Director of JISEPA, Sanitarian Adamu Sabo, explained that the training focused on maintaining hygienic practices and safeguarding public health. Participants included Faecal Sludge Emptiers, staff from the 27 local government WASH units, and JISEPA Operations Unit personnel.
According to Sabo, the training also emphasized continuous monitoring and enforcement of standards. “The two-day training is aimed at improving their business operations due to its critical importance. These individuals fill a vital role in ensuring a hygienic environment within communities,” he said.
He added that participants were registered and issued certificates of participation, which serve as official approval for conducting faecal sludge emptying activities across the state.
Sabo commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for his support, noting that the initiative aligns with the governor’s 12-point agenda, which prioritizes sustaining Jigawa’s ODF status.
In his remarks, UNICEF WASH Specialist Dr. Uba Lawal praised the governor’s efforts in upholding the state’s ODF status and assured continued support from UNICEF for similar initiatives.
