OPSH warns vigilante groups on unauthorized operations

From Tongnaan Bawa, Jos

Operation Safe Haven, a joint security outfit
has warned vigilante groups in Plateau State against conducting unauthorized operations, following a recent incident that resulted in the death of 8 vigilantes.

In a press statement signed by Major Samson Zhakom, Media Information Officer for Operation Safe Haven, in Jos, said the incident occurred when vigilantes mobilized from Kanam Local Government Area on 6th July, 2025 without notifying OPSH troops, and headed to Kukawa community.

He explained that vigilantes allegedly attacked civilians, looted provision shops, and seized over 20 motorcycles from residents, claiming they were finalizing administrative procedures before proceeding to Odare Forest.

Zhakom maintained that while advancing toward the forest, the group was ambushed by armed bandits, resulting in the deaths of eight vigilantes, with others still missing.

He said the remains of the deceased have been recovered and buried, and troops are conducting search and rescue operations to locate the missing individuals.

The statement strongly advises all vigilante groups and individuals within the state against conducting unauthorized operations without prior coordination with security forces.

It stressed that Independent actions without OPSH’s approval endanger both the operatives and innocent civilians. Adding that OPSH remains committed to maintaining peace and security in Plateau State and will take decisive action against any individual or group undermining these efforts, regardless of their motives.

Zhakom however urged the public to continue to support security agencies by providing actionable intelligence and reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
