Plateau Deputy Governor, Piyo, Says Government will Continue to prioritize the welfare of senior citizens

Plateau State Government has pledged that the present administration will continue to prioritize the interest and welfare of Older Persons in the State.

Josephine Piyo, the Deputy Governor of Plateau State made this known in Jos on Saturday during the 2024 International Day of the Older Persons.

She said the elderly population is a treasure trove of wisdom, experience, and resilience and has weathered life’s storms, overcome challenges, and paved the way for future generations and must be treated with the respect, compassion, and care they deserve.

In a statement signed by her chief press secretary, Martha Nyam, the Deputy Governor underscored the contributions of the older citizens in guiding the coming generation and in sustaining the State’s legacies, according to her the recognition of the fact that no society will prosper or flourish where the wisdom and participation of the older persons are neglected.

“Strengthening care and support systems for older persons is not just a moral imperative; it is a societal responsibility. We must create inclusive and age-friendly environments that promote active aging, social participation, and access to essential services”

“Investing in healthcare, social services, and community support programs for older persons is not just an expense; it is an investment in our collective future. By prioritizing the well-being of our elders, we are building a more compassionate, equitable, and sustainable society for all”.

She added that the Governor Caleb Mutfwang-led administration would stand in solidarity with the elderly population, advocate for their rights, ensure that they age with dignity and grace, and commit to building a state where older persons are valued, respected, and cherished for the invaluable contributions they continue to make.

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Caroline Darfur said that the 2024 theme ‘Celebrating the True Value and Significance of Older Persons and the integral role they play is apt given the neglect being suffered by most of the older citizens.

Dafur emphasized that older persons play critical roles and constitute a powerful force for social cohesion and integration in the face of multiple challenges in the present world.
