The Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, and other key stakeholders have called for collective action to combat hate speech and fake news, warning that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
The warning was issued during a one-day stakeholders’ workshop and Kano State Youth Summit 2.0 held at Khairun University, Kano, aimed at promoting peace and responsible communication.
Speaking at the event, CP Bakori described the spread of hate speech and misinformation as a growing threat to peaceful coexistence and socio-economic development in Kano State.
He said the workshop was organized in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to develop effective strategies for tackling social biases and misinformation.
The police commissioner noted that Kano, known for its cultural heritage and hospitality, could suffer social unrest and violence if hate speech and fake news are not addressed. He warned that individuals found spreading false information or inciting violence would be prosecuted.
Bakori reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Police Command to maintaining law and order, urging social media users, journalists, community leaders, and influencers to support efforts to promote peace and stability.
Also speaking at the summit, the Executive Director of the Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), Zainab Nasir Ahmad, emphasized the critical role of youths in tackling misinformation.
She said fake news and hate speech have increasingly become threats to public order, social harmony, and national security.
Zainab noted that while social media and radio platforms are powerful tools for communication, they can also spread inflammatory narratives if used irresponsibly. She urged young people to verify information before sharing it and reject divisive language that could trigger violence.
She added that combating fake news does not mean suppressing freedom of expression but ensuring responsible and ethical communication. Ahmad also commended media professionals for their role in maintaining professional standards and promoting unity.
Similarly, the Kano State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, represented by Sarkin Shanun Kano, highlighted the achievements of the state government’s Safe Corridor Initiative, which focuses on rehabilitating and reintegrating repentant youths involved in criminal activities.
According to him, over 2,000 youths have been profiled under the initiative, with plans to provide vocational training, education opportunities, and other empowerment programmes. He noted that the programme has contributed to a reduction in hooliganism, phone snatching, and clashes among youth groups.
Waiya also warned social media users and journalists against spreading unverified information, stressing that sharing false content makes individuals accomplices in misinformation.
The summit was organised through a partnership between the Kano State Police Command, YOSPIS, and the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation, with stakeholders reiterating the need for collaboration to foster peace, unity, and sustainable development in Kano State.
