Public Advised on the Use of Rainwater

As the rainy season intensifies, the people of Kano State are being advised to exercise caution when using rainwater for drinking and other domestic purposes.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, issued this advisory in a press statement from the ministry’s information and public relations unit, signed by its head, Ibrahim Abdullahi, and made available to the media.

Dr. Yusuf highlighted that the rainy season often brings an increased risk of cholera, which has already affected some states. He emphasized the importance of prevention, stating, “Prevention is better than cure.”

He urged the public to scrutinize what they consume, particularly vegetables, fruits, and drinking water, to avoid contamination. “It is crucial for people to understand that rainwater at the beginning of the rainy season is unclean. If one must use it, it must be purified using water treatment methods, such as boiling and filtering, before use. This will greatly help protect against cholera,” he advised.

The Commissioner also stressed the importance of thoroughly washing vegetables and fruits with clean water, as these items are often purchased from markets with minimal cleanliness.

Dr. Yusuf assured the public that the administration of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to prioritizing health care. He urged individuals to seek medical attention promptly if they fall ill and prayed for the safety of Kano State and its people against cholera and other illnesses. “We must protect ourselves to receive Allah’s protection,” he concluded.
