Ramadan: KNSG, BUK Feed Over 800 Students Daily

In a bid to support the less privileged during the holy month of Ramadan, the Kano State government partnered with the Bayero University Kano (BUK) New Campus Committee to provide daily meals to over 800 students.

PRIME TIME NEWS Correspondent, Fatima Binta Idris gathered from the Committee  Coordinator, Dr. Nura Ibrahim, who revealed that the initiative stemmed from a needs assessment that identified students struggling to afford meals while staying on campus throughout Ramadan.

According to Dr. Nura, their initial target was to feed 200 students daily, but due to the overwhelming response, they have now expanded the program to reach 1,000 students.

“The BUK New Campus Mosque committee is grateful for the positive contributions from individuals, private organizations, and the government,” Dr. Nura said, acknowledging the collaboration that made the program possible.

An additional organization, the Annur Possibility Center, has also joined the effort by providing financial support to ensure the program continues throughout Ramadan. Their aim, according to Ustaz Ismail Okon Odun, is to offer meals to anyone in need, regardless of background.

Students on Campus who spoke to our Correspondent, Aisha Ndanusa Ibrahim have expressed mixed reactions to the program. Abdulwahid Abdulsalam, a law student,  applauded the initiative, calling it “a great privilege given to the poor and average students.”

However, some students have raised concerns about the long wait times to receive meals. Maryam Abdulfatai, an information and media studies student,  noted that while the food distribution itself follows government guidelines, the process of obtaining meal tickets is lengthy and challenging.

“The major challenge about the program is the 2-3 hours standing on queue coupled with dragging and pushing you get the meal,” said Rukayya Muhammad Bala, a political science student.

She added that students can choose to wait at the mosque or return to their hostels while they wait for their meals to be ready.
