Re: Setting the record straight on Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Access Bank

Recent defamatory social media claims by Jackson Ude, who has spent two decades in exile, seek to unjustly tarnish the reputation of Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, an esteemed Nigerian banker and philanthropist, and undermine the legacy of Access Bank.
It is important to address these falsehoods and safeguard the integrity of the individuals and institutions involved.
As the former Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank from 2002 to 2013, and currently the Chairman, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede was instrumental in transforming the bank from a mid-tier player into one of Nigeria’s top financial institutions. Under his leadership, Access Bank grew into one of the country’s top five banks, recognized for its strategic growth, resilience, and expansion across Africa. Noteworthy achievements include:
– Leading Access Bank’s international expansion, including key acquisitions in South Africa, Botswana, and the establishment of operations in Guinea, thereby broadening the bank’s footprint across the continent.
– Spearheading the adoption of the Nigerian Sustainable Banking Principles in 2012, setting an example for responsible banking practices that have since been adopted by other nations.
– Chairing the Presidential Committee on Fuel Subsidies, where his commitment to transparency saved Nigeria over $6 billion by exposing fraudulent subsidy claims.
These accomplishments underscore Aigboje’s dedication to sustainable growth, transparency, and innovation, values that continue to shape Access Bank’s success today.
The recent passing of Herbert Wigwe, former Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank, was a significant loss to Nigeria’s financial sector. Wigwe, a close partner to Aigboje, worked hand-in-hand with him to build Access Bank into a powerhouse within Africa’s banking landscape. Jackson Ude’s baseless accusation that Aigboje seeks to undermine Wigwe’s legacy is both false and insensitive.
Aigboje has always respected and celebrated Wigwe’s contributions. Their leadership was built on mutual respect and a shared vision. Aigboje’s return to Access Bank’s board following Wigwe’s passing was aimed at ensuring continuity and stability, not at diminishing his partner’s legacy. The success of Access Bank remains a testament to their collaborative efforts.
Regarding the ongoing legal dispute over Herbert Wigwe’s estate, it is a private family matter that should be addressed by the courts. Ude’s public misrepresentation of this issue is reckless and potentially harmful to the judicial process. Matters of guardianship and estate management are delicate and should not be subject to public speculation or manipulation.
Aigboje has consistently supported the Wigwe family in alignment with their wishes and legal frameworks. Outsiders should refrain from sowing discord in this personal family matter.
Despite these unfounded allegations, Access Bank remains one of Africa’s most respected financial institutions. Its commitment to innovation, regional growth, and customer satisfaction has only strengthened over time. The bank’s assets have surpassed ₦10 trillion, and it continues to receive numerous industry awards, cementing its reputation for excellence.
The enduring partnership between Aigboje and Wigwe has left an indelible mark on the bank’s success. Furthermore, Access Bank’s recent collaboration with ARM Pensions highlights its ongoing dedication to delivering top-tier services and innovative solutions, a testament to its solid leadership and future vision.
It is troubling that individuals like Jackson Ude use their platforms to spread false narratives about leaders who have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s economic development. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede’s achievements, both at Access Bank and within Nigeria’s financial sector, are globally recognized and well-documented. As a public activist and health advocate, I am committed to defending the truth and ensuring that the legacies of both Aigboje and the late Herbert Wigwe are preserved and respected.
Both leaders have made substantial contributions to corporate social responsibility, particularly in health, education, and disaster management, benefiting communities across Nigeria.
The public deserves the truth, not defamation. It is our duty to uphold integrity, and fairness, and recognize the invaluable contributions of these remarkable individuals.
