Retired AVM Ibrahim Umar Assumes Duty as Commissioner for Internal Security, Seeks Stronger Synergy with Security Agencies

The newly appointed Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Retired Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Ibrahim Umar, has officially assumed office, with a call for stronger collaboration among security agencies to effectively address insecurity in Kano State.

AVM Umar made the call while addressing journalists shortly after taking over duties at the ministry’s headquarters along Maiduguri Road. He emphasized that although security is a familiar terrain for him, a collective effort is crucial for meaningful results.

“Security issues are not new to me, but achieving sustainable peace requires more hands on deck,” he stated. “We will deepen collaboration with traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, community stakeholders, and civil society to build resilient local security structures.”

The commissioner described his new role as a sensitive assignment, reiterating that security remains the bedrock of progress. He pledged to discharge his duties with integrity and diligence, ensuring the protection of lives and property across the state.

He expressed appreciation to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for entrusting him with the role, promising to uphold justice, equity, discipline, and work towards improving the lives of ordinary citizens.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Dan’asabe Yahya, welcomed the commissioner on behalf of the staff, assuring him of their unwavering support. He also offered prayers for divine guidance and success in the commissioner’s new responsibilities.

In his remarks, a stalwart of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) from Dala Local Government Area, Alhaji Kabiru Falaki, described AVM Umar’s appointment as well-deserved, noting his distinguished 35-year career in the military. He urged ministry staff to offer their full support for a successful tenure.

The commissioner’s arrival at the ministry was marked by a large turnout of NNPP supporters, who chanted political slogans and praised his humility and dedication to the welfare of the less privileged.
