As Malam Nuhu Ribadu turns 64 on November 21, 2024, Nigerians celebrate a leader whose public service life has become a symbol of integrity and security. From his groundbreaking role as the first chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to his current position as National Security Adviser, Ribadu has dedicated himself to justice and security of the nation, leaving an irreversible mark on Nigeria’s path toward transparency, peace, and prosperity.
Born on November 21, 1960, Ribadu’s story symbolizes commitment to public service. His tenure as the EFCC Chairman from 2003 to 2008 under President Olusegun Obasanjo set an unprecedented standard in the fight against corruption. Through landmark cases and high-profile convictions, Mallam demonstrated fearless leadership and a relentless pursuit of accountability, securing over 270 successful convictions and taking on cases that many would have hesitated to approach. Among his most notable acts of integrity was his refusal of a $15 million bribe from former Governor James Ibori—a decision that still echoes across the nation as a powerful statement against corruption. Mallam’s impact extended beyond Nigerian borders, strengthening the country’s global reputation and earning Nigeria a place in the prestigious Egmont Group while ensuring its delisting from the FATF’s Non-Cooperative Countries and Territories list.
Ribadu’s time at the EFCC earned him accolades worldwide, including the World Bank’s Jit Gill Memorial Award, an honorary Doctor of Laws from Babcock University, and ThisDay newspaper’s “Game Changer” award in 2015. His reputation as an anti-corruption crusader has stood the test of time, inspiring generations of Nigerians to dream of a country founded on principles of transparency, honesty, and patriotism.
Today, as Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Ribadu’s legacy continues to grow as he brings the same commitment to security that he once brought to anti-corruption efforts. Under his guidance, Nigeria has witnessed positive changes in its approach to security. In the Southeast, Mallam Ribadu spearheaded the rebuilding of over 40 police stations destroyed by insurgents, restoring the region’s confidence in the state’s commitment to protect its citizens. In the Northwest, his strategic approach has led to the elimination of notorious bandit leaders, restoring peace and stability in communities that have long been plagued by violence. The Northeast, once a hotbed of insurgency, now enjoys relative peace, thanks to Ribadu’s effective, intelligence-driven strategy in confronting and containing threats to Nigeria’s security.
Indeed, counter-terrorism requires more than brute force, Ribadu has been an ardent promoter of a comprehensive security strategy. He emphasizes the importance of intelligence-led operations, advocating for enhanced cooperation between Nigeria’s intelligence agencies, such as the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). Under his leadership, Nigeria’s counter-terrorism framework now incorporates cutting-edge technology to track terrorist activities, strengthening the nation’s capacity to respond to emerging threats in real-time. Ribadu has also taken bold steps to curb banditry and kidnapping in Northern and Central Nigeria, launching aggressive military operations that have brought new hope to communities that once lived in constant fear.
Furthermore, Ribadu has strengthened Nigeria’s partnerships with neighboring countries to combat transnational challenges such as arms trafficking, drug trade, and terrorism. His collaboration with countries like Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin, through regional frameworks like ECOWAS and the Lake Chad Basin Commission, has fortified Nigeria’s ability to address complex security issues at their root.
What makes Ribadu’s leadership truly stand out is his selfless commitment to integrity. Through all his roles, he has worn the white garment of integrity unblemished—a rare feat in today’s political landscape. Ribadu’s forthrightness, selflessness, and unshakable belief in the Nigeria project have not only earned him the respect of millions but have also left an enduring legacy that young leaders aspire to emulate. He has shown that leadership is about serving the people with honesty, courage, and an unrelenting commitment to justice. His mentorship and fatherly guidance have inspired many, and his example reminds us all that true greatness is not about power but about selfless sacrifice, and a genuine desire to uplift the downtrodden.
